O Design é preciso nasceu em 2009 e foi parceiro do Ano Europeu do Voluntariado 2011.
Quando pensamos em voluntariado e solidariedade, nunca nos lembramos do design como uma prioridade, mas o facto é que o design pode fazer a diferença, pode desenvolver projectos que melhorem a qualidade de vida das pessoas, contribuindo assim para uma sociedade melhor. Acreditamos que as ferramentas estão ao alcance de todos e que só deste modo poderemos desenvolver soluções para os nossos problemas, com consciência e com uma atitude de responsabilidade social. Sabemos que está nas nossas mãos mudar e melhorar.
O Design é preciso tem como objectivo a realização de projectos que contribuam para o desenvolvimento social, através de uma bolsa de designers Voluntários que, com a sua experiência e disponibilidade, ajudem as instituições de solidariedade social em Portugal. Unir quem sabe a quem precisa, acreditando que todos sabemos, que todos precisamos e que em rede podemos fazer melhor.
O Design é preciso tem como principais objectivos:
01 desenvolver uma rede de cooperação voluntária entre instituições, designers e parceiros de produção.
02 estimular a partilha de conhecimento entre todos os intervenientes, através da gestão e inclusão dos seus contributos e sugestões durante o processo de desenvolvimento do projecto.
03 contribuir para alterar a percepção que existe do design e dos designers.
A volunteer design Portuguese network that links who knows with who needs because only with knowledge, cooperating and a responsibility citizenship, can we achieve better society and quality of life.

The idea is to have a network of volunteer designers that with their capabilities and skills help solidarity activities by developing design projects that improve quality of life in those organizations and of the people who use them.
With collaboration of a Solidarity organization We need design make a check-list of the design needs. Than we choose one of the needs and make a briefing together. Our goal it is to bring design to these local projects. It is working with Portuguese organizations. It is working in the field, near the people and through the process design try to improve quality of life in those organizations and of the people who use them. And will be glad if each of them change the idea of design and recognize the design and designers as a useful thing, as a partner.
After we challenge the designers to participate, we put the briefing in the homepage and we promote them with mailing list, in social networks and with the support of our partners. We call them Challenges not contest. Because we want to invite the designer to participate, we wish the designer embrace that cause and feel the experience. We believe that every designers who seriously think about a solution and responds to our challenges are winners, and we promote all them in our communication supports.
The project that is chosen by the jury will be given to the organization and we will try to obtain a sponsor to produce it. We have engage some sponsors in our cause to produce the work of designers.
Sometimes the challenge needs to have a share solution, not just communication, or equipment or web design but also one that crosses different areas of design. When this happens we invite the design schools to develop the solution, they can do this work in the classroom… and students can design real work for real needs. And we have some design schools in Portugal that at moment are collaborating with us.
